The Portland Observer, Thursday, January 1, 1942

Mrs. Joseph Barnes passed away Friday, December 26, at a Grand Rapids hospital 
where she had been taken a week before following a fall in which she sustained 
a broken hip and several other injuries.

Her maiden name was Lavina Belle Griffin and she was born in Eaton Rapids, 
September 15, 1866.  She was married to Mr. Barnes on April 22, 1905.  The 
couple settled on a farm in Danby township where they resided until last July 
when they moved to Portland village, selling their farm to Mr. and Mrs. Henry 
Noren.

Mrs. Barnes is survived by the husband; a brother, Almerion Griffin, of Mason 
and a sister, Mrs. Mina Reynolds, of Eaton Rapids.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Neller Funeral Home 
in Portland, in charge of Rev. N. B. Lawrason of the Portland Methodist 
church, with burial in Danby cemetery.
