Dec. 11, 2012 George Barnes, 78, of Lyons passed away Dec. 9, 2012 as a result of a medical complication. He was born Aug. 13, 1934 in Pewamo, Mich., to Hugh and Jennie (Resler) Barnes. When he was 4, his family moved to Lyons, and he made his home there the rest of his life. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Bette (Maddox); three daughters, Debra (Bruce) Hazel of Ozona, Texas, Marcia (Bruce) Hersch of Ionia, and Jennifer Barnes of Lyons; grandsons; Terren (Jenna) Schafer, Aaron Rogers and Ashton Firovich; granddaughters; Tiffany (Jeremy) Hoppes, Heather Hersch, Jordan Hersch, Emily Rogers and Zoey Firovich; great grandsons Zeke Zander, Bryce Hoppes and Alex Dusette; great granddaughters, MacKenzie Zander and Payton Hoppes; sisters, Caroline (Doug) Laney of Ionia and June Ferris of Ionia; brother Richard Barnes of Greenville; sister-in-law Lisa Limon; brothers-in-law Kenneth Maddox, Kevin (Amy) Maddox and James (Carol) Maddox; many nieces ad nephews; and his loyal companion Snoopy 2. He was preceded in death by his mother Jennie Barnes, father Hugh Barnes and brothers, John Barnes and Frank Barnes. He served four years in the Army and enjoyed his time overseas in Germany. He retired from Fisher Body in Lansing and devoted his time to many hobbies. He loved "tinkering" in his garage and you could always find him working on motors, tires or anything that was broken. He enjoyed fishing and hunting in his younger years, loved to play cards, and tell stories. When he and his brother Frank would get together they would have you laughing, to the point of crying. They were quite a team. He was very special to many people, always helping if needed, no one could have asked for a truer friend. He loved spending time with his daughters; teaching them how to fish, (even though he spent most of the time getting their fishing lines out of trees), teaching them how to mushroom hunt (they always had to pick the first mushroom), teaching them how to play cribbage and euchre (don't cheat) and teaching them how to drive (and they all ended up driving like Dad!). Family and friends are invited to the VFW in Lyons from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012 for a "Celebration of his life." We would love to hear your special memories of George. If you are unable to attend you may send a note to: Betty Barnes, P.O. Box 11, Lyons, MI 48851. Arrangements are with Lehman Funeral Homes, Ionia.
