"Dick" Barnes passed away peacefully at home Saturday, November 9, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 18, 1938 in Portland, MI the son of Richard J. and Lucille Gilbert Barnes. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Richard W. Barnes, a granddaughter Jessica Barnes, his sister Mrs. Joan Green, and his brother Gary J. Barnes. Dick was a retired insurance agent, having started his career with Prudential Financial Services in 1963. In 1967 he transferred to Greenville where he represented the company until his retirement in 1993. He was a Life Underwriters Training Council Chartered Fellow, a past member of the National Association of Life Underwriters, and a recipient of numerous company and industry awards. Dick served on the Greenville Planning Commission from 1995 to 2000, and on the Greenville Zoning Board of Appeals from 1996 to 1999. He was also a life member of the Greenville Fighting Falcon Military Museum and served on their board of directors. A member of the Ionia County Genealogical Society, and First Families of Ionia County. Dick loved nature and the outdoors. His interests included history and antiques, traveling, and many others, but most of all he took a deep and abiding joy in his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren. Surviving are his companion, best friend, and wife of 57 years, Kay. Also a daughter, Debra L. Nicholson of Holland, a son and daughter-in-law, Craig S. and Margie Barnes of Stanton, four grandchildren, Ashley Nicholson, Jason and Amber Barnes, Jeffrey Barnes, and Melissa Burke, four great grandchildren, and a sister, Carol Church of Grand Ledge. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m., Friday, November 15, 2013 at Hurst Funeral Home, 1801 W. Washington Street, Greenville, MI. The Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 16, 2013 at the Portland United Methodist Church, 310 E. Bridge Street, Portland, with Pastor Keith Treman and Rev. Kim Delong presiding. The family will receive friends from 11-1 p.m. on Saturday at the church. Interment will be in the family plot at Portland Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Lehman Funeral Homes, Portland. In Lieu of Flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Richard and Kay Barnes Scholarship fund at the Greenville Area community foundation at 101 N. Lafayette, Greenville, MI 48838.
