Ionia Standard - Friday, Sept. 29, 1899

                    DR. HORACE B. BARNES DIED IN OHIO.
                          A Grand-Good Man Gone.

A telegram was received here at four o'clock this Friday  morning announcing 
that Dr. H. b. Barnes was dead at Continental, Ohio. The telegram was 
received by Dr. W. L. Barnes, son of deceased. No further particulars were 
given, though it is altogether probable that death was the result of another 
stroke of paralysis. The "old doctor" and Mrs. Barnes were visiting 
relatives of Mrs. Barnes (the Nelles family) at the time, and he was in his 
usual health when he left Ionia. 

To the older people of Ionia county, no words of eulogium are necessary. For 
forty-five years he has been a respected resident of the county, honest and 
honorable at all times - a grand, good man. 

H. B. Barnes was born in Chardon, Ohio, August 15, 1834, thus only recently  
having passed his 65th years. He came to Michigan in 1839, and to Ionia in 
1961. He continued, a highly regarded and wise counselor in his profession 
up to the day on his death, and was the ranking pioneer practitioner.

Dr. W. L. Barnes started this morning for Ohio.

A letter was received here this afternoon by Ray L. Barnes, which was 
written by his mother on Wednesday, in which she says the doctor was seized 
with a severe bowel trouble the night previous, but was much improved of it 
as the hour of writing, and expressing the hope he was out of danger. 

Dr. W. L. Barnes will reach Continental this evening, and it is expected he 
will arrive in Ionia with the remains tomorrow.
