She was born in Ionia, August 17, 1853, the youngest child and only daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Alanson Cornell, who were pioneers in Ionia county. She was baptized into the Ionia Baptist church at the early age of ten years, married March 12, 1879, and on Sept. 22, 1903, death relieved her from the suffering she had endured for 18 years. She leaves to mourn her death, her only child, Stuart C. Barnes, two brothers, Henry and Lucian Cornell, with their families, and a large circle of cousins and other relatives. Notwithstanding the fact that she has been an invalid, enduring intense and constant suffering for these many years, she has yet carried in her mind all the responsibilities of directing the affairs of her home, including several years care of an invalid mother, and the watchcare and training of her son. It is very rare to see one of her age still holding as she did her circle of girlhood friends. Several of them have been her constant companions during her long years of patient waiting and enduring, and they ministered to her lovingly and tenderly to the very last. Services were conducted at the house on Thursday afternoon, her pastor Rev. D. L. Martin officiating. Two familiar hymns were tenderly rendered by Miss Pearl Freeman and Miss Kate Benedict. The floral offerings were profuse and represented the kind remembrances of a large number. The carriers were the two brothers, Henry and Lucian Cornell, Stanley Cornell, and Edward Emmett The pastor’s remarks were based upon her favorite text, John 14:2, “I go to prepare a place for you.” Selections were read from two poems which were known to have been her favorites, and which she had reread many times, “The Home-land” and “Tis Bravery Then.” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/b/barnes6275nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 2.4 Kb
