Barnes died at his home in Portland township northeast of town on Tuesday night last. He would have been 76 years of age next March. He was a native of Oswego county, N.Y., and came to Portland with his father, B. B. Barnes in the spring of 1840, and settled upon the farm where he died and where he resided ever since—nearly 61 years—and where he had led an industrious, honorable, upright life. He was an ardent republican but never held public office. He knew what pioneer life was like and had tasted its joys and sorrows. Beside a widow he leaves five sons, N. B., George, Frank, Will, Marsena, all residing in this township. Funeral services, largely attended, were conducted from the Congregational church, with which he and his wife had been identified in early life, on Friday last. Rev. Stevens officiated. N. B. Barnes and Letitia Rice were married 48 years ago. She is the sister of John Rice, Mrs. J. R. Davids and Mrs. Martin Compton of Danby.
