Barnes, 89, of 507 State St. died Saturday morning in Ionia County Memorial Hospital. Born in Greenville, Nov. 29, 1890, the son of Charles and Minnie (Linderman) Barnes, he attended school in Ionia and then Ferris Institute in Big Rapids. He served with the U.S. Army in France and Germany during World War I, and after his discharge, returned to Ionia where he married Nellie Payne on Dec. 17, 1924. The Barnes marked their 55th wedding anniversary in December, after living all their married life in Ionia. Barnes began working at Ypsilanti-Reed and continued at the Ionia Manufacturing Division of Mitchell-Bentley, being named purchasing agent before retiring in 1957 after 37 years of service. Barnes served as Ionia mayor for two terms, from 1945-47, after serving as a councilman for 20 years. He was also a Main Street businessman with his son-in-law for 10 years. Active in community affairs, Barnes was a member of the First Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the Ionia Lodge F&AM, a member of the Royal Arch Masons and a past commander of the Knights Templer. He also was a 50-year member and past commander of the Ionia American Legion, past president of the Ionia Rotary Club and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Barnes was also a past president of the Ionia Free Fair Association and for many years was active as the veterans’ service officer for the American Legion. Surviving are his wife, Nellie, a daughter, Mrs. Marvin (Gwen) Kuieck of Ionia, a brother, Claude of Greenville; three sisters, Mrs. Tressie Jensen, Mrs. Don (Elsie) Fuller and Mrs. Hattie Fisher, all of Greenville, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carl Hausermann officiating. Burial will be in Balcom Cemetery.
