Barnes Demise of a Popular and Well Known Ionia Attorney. Osmond T. Barnes, one of Ionia’s most popular young lawyers, died at 9 o’clock Tuesday, after an illness of one week. The report was hardly believed at first, but investigation and inquiry only confirmed its truth, and caused sorrow and regret among the citizens of Ionia in general. Mr. Barnes was taken sick a week ago. The immediate cause of his death was brain trouble. This it is thought was superinduced by the injury received about two years ago. He was driving a horse across the highwater road, and the beast became frightened at a train and switched his tail over the line. Mr. Barnes leaned forward over the dashboard to release the line, when the horse kicked, stricking him in the forehead. The injury was then serious and it was feared fatal, but with careful treatment he recovered and has enjoyed good health until recently, he having, of late, been troubled with severe headaches. Mr. Barnes was the son of Dr. and Mrs. H.B. Barnes and was 25 years of age last February. He was a young man just started out in life with bright prospects, a member of the Ionia county bar, and a graduate of the Ann Arbor law school. He studied law in the office of Col. John H. Mitchell and only a short time ago opened an office by himself in the Burhans block where he was rapidly building up a nice practice. In the circuit court he did a good deal of business and always made a good impression when appearing before the bar. Socially he was a general favorite with the young people. His death is a terrible blow to his parents, for he was a most devoted and affectionate son. On receipt of the news of his death Judge Davis at once adjourned court in respect to his memory, and appointed as a committee to draft suitable resolutions at a meeting in the court room Tuesday evening the following members of the bar: Messrs. R.A. Hawley, A.A. Ellis, W.O. Webster, T.M. Nesbitt and J.H. Mitchell. ------------ The funeral of Osmond T. Barnes was from the residence of his parents, Dr. and Mrs. H.B. Barnes, East Main street, this (Thursday) afternoon at 2:30 o’clock.
