Barnes, a Descendant of Dr. and Mrs. W.B. Lincoln, to Be Buried Here. Word received late Tuesday night by K.R. Smith to the effect that Raymond L. Barnes, of Detroit, was improving hour by hour was followed Wednesday by a brief telegram telling of his death at noon Wednesday. Mr. Barnes’ condition has been critical for several days but hope that he might rally after a serious operation performed last week was felt as the days passed. Funeral arrangements had not been made Wednesday but it was certain that interment would be at Highland Park cemetery in the lot where his parents, brother, and son are buried. Raymond Barnes was the youngest son of Dr. and Mrs. H. B. Barnes, and a grandson of Dr. and Mrs. W.B. Lincoln, pioneer settlers of Ionia and members of the Dexter colony. He was the last member of his immediate family, his parents and a brother, Osmond having died years ago and a brother, Dr. William L. Barnes, last June. Because of the intimate manner in which preceding generations of his family have been associated in the founding and the growth of Ionia, as well as his own life here as a boy and for years of his manhood, Mr. Barnes always maintained affection and interest in Ionia and never missed an occasion to visit it and renew the many friendships that existed here. He was in Ionia to attend the centennial celebration last June. But a week before he entered the hospital he came to Ionia to attend the funeral services for G. Morgan Smith. Mr. Barnes was born in the present George Curtis residence, formerly the Dr. H.B. Barnes homestead on East Main street, January 25, 1874. He attended the Ionia schools and after leaving the high school entered the employ of Smith & Smith as a clerk. in 1894? he became a member of the firm of Smith and Barnes which continued until 1906 when he left Ionia to begin the manufacture of theatrical scenery in Birmingham, a life of endeavor in which he had become deeply interested largely through his active associations with the theater in Ionia as a manager of the Ionia opera house in the days when the most prominent men and women of the stage and their companies visited Ionia. Following the decline of the legitimate stage and the growth in popularity of the moving picture industry Mr. Barnes went to Detroit where for many years he had been associated with the Michigan Mutual Liability Insurance company. His home was at 85 Moran road, Detroit. Mr. Barnes is survived by his widow, who was prior to their marriage Miss Jessie Yates, of Ionia, one son, Austin, a grandson and granddaughter. He came to Ionia seven years ago to bury his other son William, who was killed in an automobile accident. Announcement of the funeral services in Detroit and of the your of burial here had not been decided upon late Wednesday. ------------ Funeral services for Raymond L. Barnes will be conducted in Detroit, Friday afternoon. Saturday morning the funeral party will leave Detroit at 8 o’clock by motor car for Ionia where interment will take place upon their arrival here at Highland Park cemetery. The party is expected at about 11:30 o’clock and Fr. E.G. White, of St. Johns Episcopal church will conduct the burial service at the cemetery.
