She was born April 7, 1928 in Lansing, the daughter of Harold and Katherine Anderson. Dorothy resided in Lansing until 1940 when her parents moved to Woodbury where her father opened the Anderson's General Store. Dorothy spent many hours working for her father in this store. She graduated from the Woodland High School in June of 1946. She then attended the Lansing Acme Business College where she obtained her general business degree. She went to work as a secretary in the accounting department for W.E. Bliss until the birth of her and Johns' first child, Thomas. She did not return to working outside the home until after her last child entered school. She worked for Lake Odessa High School helping to develop the office procedures at the new high school.
