Lake Odessa Scrapbook - April 1894

Mr. Henry Barnum, son of Zebulon and Betsy Barnum, was born in Carlton, Orleans 
Co., N.Y., Nov. 25th, 1825, and died in Carlton, Barry Co., Mich., April 9th, 
1894, of heart failure. Deceased was the youngest and last surviving child of a 
family of twelve children. He came to Michigan with his parents when but eleven 
years of age, stopping fora year in Jackson Co.. The following year he came with 
the family and settled on the farm (then a wilderness) he owned when he died; 
and where he spent his boyhood and manhood days, and by his efforts made it to 
bud and blossom as the rose. At the early age of twenty he was united in 
marriage with Miss Sarah A Crippin, and to them were born four children, two of 
whom died in infancy. The remaining two, Austin C., living two miles south of 
the farm, and Viola, wife of Prof. L.E. Erland, of Plainwell, Allegan Co.. His 
wife died Jan. 11th, 1858, leaving him with the small children and an aged 
mother to care for, his father having died several years, previous, March 1st, 
1859 he was married to Miss Larina Rogers, to them were born two children. 
Walter S. is married and living at the old homestead, and HJesse, wife of Perry  
Stowell, is living in West Carlton, Mr.Barnum was a kind and affectionate 
husband, an indulgent neighbor.Honored and respected by a large circle of 
friends, he went down to the grave lamented. He was buried from the 
Holmes'M.E.Church under the auspices of the F.& A.M., Rev. A.R.Keillor; 
preaching the sermon from Matt.22:32
