He was married to Maria Gilbert October 31, 1841, and in September 1853 they moved from New York to Michigan, and settled in Boston Township, Ionia county, where he has since resided, with the exception of one year he spent in Lowell village in the employ of Hatch and Craw. He had no children, but in 1851 he took into his heart and home his wife’s nephew, Joel A. Gilbert, to whom he has ever been a kind and loving father and with whom he has lived since the death of his wife, February 26, 1899. With the half-century of “Uncle Jim’s” life that has been spent in this vicinity, you are all familiar. He was a faithful member of Lowell Lodge No. 90. F.&A.M., for many years and kept his interest in the lodge to the last. For nearly a year his health has been failing, though he was not confined to his bed at all. His death came suddenly, Thursday morning, February 15, 1906. He is survived by one brother, J. C. Barnum, of Oconomowoc, Wis., many other relatives and a host of friends, who mourn their loss. Funeral services were held from the home February 19, 1906, conducted by Rev. J. H. Wesbrook, assisted by Rev. Henry Coles, burial was made under the auspices of Lowell Lodge F.&A.M., in South Boston cemetery.
