Mrs. Barrone, who before her marriage was Miss Sarah Avery, was born in Rose, Oakland county, in 1845. Five years later her parents moved to a farm in Gratiot county, north of what is now the site of Hubbardston. At that time the nearest village was Lyons, where the family did most of its trading. In 1869 she moved to Hubbardston and the same year was united in marriage to Mr. Barrone, to which union six children were born. Four survive, including Vernon of California; Charles, Bradley, Ill.; Arthur, Detroit; and Elmer, at home. Mr. Brrrone, who is one of Hubbardston’s three remaining veterans of the Civil war also survives, together with five grandchildren and one great- grandchild. For some time after the marriage the couple resided on what is known as the George Runyan farm, north of the village, later trading the farm for the Runyan hotel in Hubbardston, which they operated for years as the Avery house. The hostelry did a flourishing business during the logging days but closed soon after this industry moved on to other sections when that part of the state became cleared. October 24 Mr. and Mrs. Barrone quietly passed the sixtieth milestone of their wedded life, Mrs. Barrone being confined to her bed. For years Mrs. Barrone had been an active member of the Hubbardston Women’s Relief corps.
