She was born on April 18, 1925, in Lyons, Mich., to George D. and Zana M. Gates as Geraldine Elaine Gates. She was a charter member of the Bible Missionary Church of Zephyrhills, a life member of D.A.V. Chapter 65 Auxiliary and a member of several quilting clubs. She made blankets for babies with AIDS, made lap throws for disabled veterans and, for many years, performed missionary work through the church. She moved to Zephyrhills, Fla. in 1980 with her late husband from Michigan where she worked for the state. She also worked part time for the Milan Dragway. While in Florida she worked part time for the Pasco Shopper-News and Publix Supermarket. She married Franklin E. Barton in Sept. 1950. He preceded her in death in November 1991. She was also preceded in death by both parents and three half brothers, Carl, George A. and Harold Gates, all of Columbus, Ohio. She is survived by one brother, George E. and wife, Kay Gates, of Capitan, N.M.; two half brothers, Ralph and wife, Sherry Gates, and Butch Gates; two half sisters, Shirley and husband, Ross Hazlett, and Becky and husband, Charles Funk, all of Columbus, Ohio; two sons, Fred and wife, Wavie Barton, and Lemuel Barton, all of Zephyrhills, Fla.; four grandchildren, Kristin and husband, Tim Ashburn, of Gaston, S.C., Lemuel II and wife, Denna, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Jessica Barton and Raymond Barton, both of Zephyrhills; two great-grandchildren, Joey Ashburn, and Callie Ann Barton; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family will receive friends 4-6:30 p.m. Sunday, August 8, 2004, at Oakley Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held 6:30-8 p.m. with the Rev. Walter Mallard of Bible Missionary Church officiating. A small graveside service will be held Monday August 9, 2004, with burial at Chapel Hill Gardens in Dade City, Fla.
