March 13, 2012 Pastor S. Charles Bateman, 88, of David Highway, Ionia parted this life to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 11, 2012 at his home. He was born the first time in Port Huron on Feb. 14, 1924, the son of Charles and Helen Bateman who preceded him in death. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mae Mumbly Bateman. He was born the second time on Sept. 18, 1938 in a revival service in a Methodist Protestant Church in Port Huron. Rev. Bateman served our country in the Army for three years in World War II in the South Pacific. He was always proud to be called an American and to have served his country. Pastor Bateman was called to preach the Gospel in a Chapel service at Piedmont Baptist Bible College in Winston-Salem, N.C. in 1949 where he attended college for two years. He finished his schooling at Detroit (now Tyndale) Bible College after returning to Michigan. He was ordained to the Gospel ministry at Natural Bridge Baptist Church in Natural Bridge, Virginia on Jan. 29. 1952. Rev. Bateman became field pastor of four churches: Greenville Baptist, Marlbrook Baptist, Neriah Baptist and Mt. Paran Baptist in Virginia for two and one half years. In the fall of 1954, he organized Grace Baptist Church of Stuarts Draft, Va.; pastoring there for some seven years. In the meantime he also organized Immanuel Baptist Church in Staunton, Va. After he remarried in 1962, he felt led to move back to Michigan in 1963, where he pastored at Trinity Baptist Church in Imlay City then organized and pastored part-time at the First Baptist Church of Attica, in Attica. In 1968, he pastored part-time at the First Baptist Church of Richmond and worked at the LTV Missile Plant in Sterling. He also pastored at Twining Baptist Church for a time as well as being Interim Pastor of several churches in Ionia and Montcalm counties. Pastor Bateman's ministry indicated his interest in organizing and helping with struggling churches. He retired from Brown Corporation, Ionia in 1984 and, thereafter worked for EightCap, Inc. for several years. He is survived by his wife, Janis Smith Bateman of 49 years; seven children; two daughters, Sandra (Alan) Willison of Saranac and Ruth (Craig) Harder of Ionia, and five sons, Stephen Bateman of Ionia, David Bateman of Detroit, Phillip Bateman of Ionia, John C, Bateman of Ionia and Pastor Timothy (Milessa) Bateman of Clarksville. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren; Tom, Kimberly, Donovan, Corey, Katherine, Jessica, Janelle, Timothy Charles, Grace and Isaac; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers-in-law: E. John (Ethlyn) Smith of Grand Rapids and Rolland (JoAnn) Smith of Mexico City, Mexico. Services will be held at noon Wednesday, March 14 at Galilee Baptist Church in Saranac with Pastor Tim Bateman, Pastor Andy Mooren and Pastor James Frank officiating. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. Wednesday until time of services at Galilee Baptist Church. Arrangements by Lake Funeral Home in Saranac.
