Bates had been expected for some time, it nevertheless came as a great shock to his many Portland friends when the announcement was made Tuesday morning that he had passed away the night before. He had been a great sufferer for over two years and for many months had been helpless through blindness, caused by a growth in his head which pressed upon the optic nerves, and which physicians were unable to remove. Mr. Bates was born in Portland 38 years ago. Attending the public schools he grew to manhood making warm friends of all with whom he came in contact. He was united in marriage to Miss Frances Patterson and seven years ago moved to Lansing, where he was employed by the Reo Motor Co., until his illness forced him to relinquish that position. Besides the widow, he is survived by a mother, Mrs. Mary Bates, of Portland and two sisters, and two brothers. They are Mrs. Wm. H. Young of Portland; Miss Katherine Bates; Leo Bates, of Detroit, and Thomas Bates, of Orlando, Florida.
