All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/mi/mifiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Marilyn Ransom mlnransom@chartermi.net May 27, 2012, 6:36 pm The Lake Odessa Wave & Times, Thursday, November 26, 1942 Mary Margaret Bates, nee Swenk, daughter of John and Mary Swenk, was born near New Berlin, Pa., July 21, 1865, and departed this life at the home of Bertha Wagner, November 16, 1942, at the age of 77 years, three months, and 26 days. She came to Michigan with her parents when a small girl and settled at Litchfield where she spent her girlhood days. When a small girl she was converted and united with the Evangelical church to which she remained faithful to the end. In the year 1884 her parents moved to Coleman, Mich., where in 1888 she joined them. On July 4, 1890 she was united in marriage to George Lyman Bates by the Rev. W. C. Swenk, brother of the bride. To this union were born three sons and three daughters. In 1911 Mr. Bates entered the ministry of which she was a most helpful companion during his ministry. In retiring from the ministry in 1918, they and their family came to Woodland, later residing at Brooklyn, Leslie, and finally returning to Woodland where Mr. Bates passed away January 26, 1941. She was a devoted wife and a kind and loving mother interested in the welfare of her family and the cause of right. One daughter Mildred Ella preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her departure, five children, Mrs. Charles Van Zandt in Detroit, Arthur and Erwin in Woodland, Floyd at Lake Odessa and Mrs. Forest Darsey at Roseville, one sister, Mrs. O. E. Mott at Albion, and one brother, the Rev. John Swenk at Quinck, Ill., 13 grandchildren and other near relatives and many friends. Those from out of town who were in attendance at the funeral for Mrs. Bates were Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Mott, Mrs. W. C. Swenk, Mr. and Mrs. Leon Pearce from Adrian, the Rev. A. J. Hettler of Blissfield, the Rev. George Fry of Flint, Mr. and Mrs. Will Bacon of Lansing, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Perry of Pontiac, Mrs. Fannie Swenk, Mrs. H. S. McCallum of Detroit, and Mr. and Mrs. John Springett of Nashville, and Mrs. Eva Einhardt of Battle Creek, and Mrs. James Fellows from Lake Odessa.
