Ionia Sentinel Standard - June 7, 2011

Donald E. Bates, 81, of Ionia passed away June 6, 2011 in Grand Rapids. He was 
born April 12, 1930 in Hastings, the son of Floyd and Hildreth (Bywater) Bates. 
Donald married Lucille Martin June 28, 1952 in Ionia. He worked at Fisher Body 
for almost 30 years until retiring in 1995. He was a member of Smyrna Bible 
Church and UAW. He loved the Detroit Tigers and enjoyed golfing. 

Donald is survived by his loving wife of almost 59 years, Lucille, of Ionia; 
children, Michael Bates of Wyoming, Debra (Scott) Christiansen of Indiana, 
Timothy (Gena) Bates of Ohio and Phillip Bates of Ionia; brother, Darold Joe 
(Marion) Bates of Florida; 12 grandchildren, Nathan, Ruth, Micah, Joel, Amos, 
Caleb, Tammy, Timothy, Debbie, Dani, Ethan and Seth; and 11 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Margie Kimmel.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Smyrna Bible Church with 
Pastor Mike Jones officiating. Interment Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation 
will be held 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia.
