Bates, 83, passed away Friday, November 21, 2003. He was born on June 10, 1920 in Ionia the son of Vern and Mildred (Reed) Bates. Mr. Bates is a veteran of WWII having been in Pearl Harbor. He served 5 and half years in the Army as a tank commander in the Central Pacific. LaVern retired from G.M. in 1982 and was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time on Drummond Island. He was preceded in death by his parents , brothers, Jack and Richard Bates a sister, Joy Bates , son-in-law, Neil McDiarmid and a son, James R. Bates. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Gladys; daughters, Bonnie McDiarmid of Knoxville, TN. and Nancy Harmon of Portland;7 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren. Services were held Nov. 24 at Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland with Rev. Marilyn V. Danielson, Pastor First Congregational Church, Portland and Rev. Gabriel Bates officiating. Military honors were provided by the Portland V.F.W. Post #4090. Contributions may be made to Great Lakes Hospice.
