Bates, 74, of Saranac, formerly of Lowell, died Sept. 8, 1996, at his residence. He was born Aug. 14, 1922, in Norton, Virginia, the son of Henry Dobson and Mary Jane (Pocahantis) Bates. He married Leona Buck on Dec. 17, 1977. He was a World War II veteran of the Army. He was a life member of VFW Post 8303 in Lowell, and a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Post 809. He is survived by sons: James and Donna Pedaris of Alto, Randy Bates of Lowell, Richard and Robin Seese of Lowell, and Bernie and Etta Condon of Lowell; daughters: Brenda Bates Winglar of Lowell, Judy (Greg) Allchin of Ada, Debra (Fred) Peasley of Marysville; and Teresa (Jim) Hostler of Saranac; and 22 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leona Bates, on Jan. 4, 1985, and his daughter, Joyce Ann Bates, in 1952. He was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Lake Funeral Home in Saranac with the Rev. Gordie Barry officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Lowell. Visitation is Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Ionia Area Hospice or the Commission on Aging.
