Erwin J. Bates Passes Away

Erwin J. Bates, 79, of Brown Road, Route 3, Lake Odessa, passed away Friday at 
the Sparrow Hospital at Lansing, where he had been a patient since Wednesday 
evening, June 22.

He was born May 3, 1989 in Coleman, the son of George and Margaret (Swenk) Bates 
and attended the Coleman and Gladwin rural schools.

He married Florence Schneider, September 2, 1923 at Jackson and she passed away 
in 1932. He married Leona K. Schneider March 31, 1934 at Ionia. He was a farmer 
and had been an insurance agent since 1951, retiring from the insurance business 
in 1966. A  member of the Lakewood United Methodist Church and an associate 
member of the Albright United Methodist Church at Phoenix, Ariz., he had spent 
the last 11 winters at their home in Phoenix. He was also a member of the Barry 
County Farm Bureau.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Rev. Gerald Bates of Lansing and Dennis of 
Hoffman Estates, Ill; three daughters, Mrs. Eldon (Dorothy) Flessner and Mrs. 
Roger (Janice) Flanigan both of Woodland and Mrs. Henry (Sheryl) Moewers of the 
Minot N. Dakota Air Force Base; 13 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a 
brother, Floyd Bates of Ionia and a sister, Mrs. Forrest (arsey) of Phoenix, 
Ariz.

Funeral services were held Monday at 3 p.m. at the Lakewood United Methodist 
Church at Lake Odessa with burial in the Woodland Memorial Park. Rev. Charles 
Dunbar officiated. Funeral arrangements by the Pickens-Koops Funeral Chapel, 
Lake Odessa.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lakewood United Methodist Church or 
the Albright United Methodist Church at Phoenix. Envelopes are available at 
Pickens-Koops Chapel.
