She was born in Odessa township, Ionia county, February 26, 1904, the daughter of George and Dora (Buxton) Bywater. Mrs. Bates attended schools in Lake Odessa and worked for Wurzburg of Grand Rapids. On November 26, 1924 in Lansing, she married Floyd Bates. They made their home on farms in Odessa and Sebewa townships before moving to Ionia in 1944. They have spent the last several winters in Arizona. She worked for Ypsilanti Reed, Ionia Manufacturing and retired from A.O. Smith in 1966 and was a member of the Zion United Methodist church. Survivors include her husband Floyd of Ionia; two sons, Donald of Ionia and Darold Joe of Elkhart, Ind.; one daughter, Mrs. Dean (Marjorie) Kimmel of Lake Odessa; ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Wayne (Leona) Growell of Palm Springs, Ca. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Zion United Methodist church with Rev. Nolan Williams officiating. Committal service will be at the church with later interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery.
