John was born July 12, 1938 in Chesaning, the son of Carl and Marjorie (Thompson) Baum. In 1962 he graduated from Michigan State university and in 1964 started his teaching career with Belding Area Schools. At Belding, John served as football coach, wrestling coach, track coach and athletic director. Through the many years of his teaching and leadership as a coach, John gave direction and encouragement to hundreds of young men and women, inspiring them to do their very best as a student and athlete. John was blessed with a special ability to really connect with his students. John was a member of the Michigan Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame, served on the Belding Hall of Fame Committee and was a member of Shiloh Community Church. During the Vietnam War, he proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He was married Jan. 18, 1957 in Lansing to Nancy Lenhart and she survives along with their children; John D. and Patricia Baum II of Ada, Kelly A. and Linn Miller of Howell, Tammy J. and Barjas Marshed of Holiday, Fla., Polly S. and Ryan Milligan of Lake Ann; 10 grandchildren, Jacob, Mark, Laura, Zachary, Matthew, Dustin, Karly, Sami, Leila and Mitchell; two sisters, Carlene Warner and Joe Chunn of Houghton Lake and Ava Baum and Jim Bundy of Charlottesville, VA. John was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral Services will be Saturday, April 24 at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Community Church with Pastor Ken Harger officiating. Interment will follow in River Ridge Cemetery, Belding, Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding and one hour before the service at church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Belding Athletic Boosters or Shiloh Community Church.
