Beard was born in Pennsylvania, April 15th, 1823 and died at the home of his son William Beard May 6, 1911, aged 88 years and 20 days. April 15, 1849, he was married to Delilah H. Hammon. To this union nine children were born, five boys and four girls. The wife died Jan. 4th, 1888, since which time excepting a brief period he has made his home with the son William. Mr. Beard served in the Civil War from September 1864 to June 1865. He was converted when eighteen years of age and has lived an earnest and faithful soldier of the Cross during all these years and for more than a score of years has been an honored member of the United Brethren church at Lake Odessa. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, the two sons James and William and three daughters, namely; Susan Anway, Lydia Reed and Mary Smith, with 21 grand children and 18 great grand children. “Mark, the perfect man and behold the upright. For the end of that man is peace.” The funeral was held at the Liberal C. B. Church Monday at 2 p.m. The Rev. Isaac Mourer an old time friend delivered the discourse in fulfillment of a promise made to the deceased some years ago, reading the 14 chapter of Job, Text Job 11:11. Rev. J. A. Davis offered prayer. Mrs. Mourer sang a beautiful solo, “Face to Face.” The choir sang “Asleep in Jesus.” Rev. T. Laity of the M. E. church offered the closing prayer. Many old friends and neighbors followed the remains to the cemetery where according to his request six of the grandsons, Byron and Ernest Beard, Ora and Edward Anway, and Otis and Warren Reed, bore his body to its last resting place and tenderly laid it beside that of the wife of his youth who passed to the better home 23 years before and whom he rejoiced in the thought of meeting once more, telling friends he was “only waiting.” Grandfather will be missed by the son who cared for him in the home, by the daughter who he often said was so good to him, by the grandson whose pleasure it has been to read to him from the papers and magazines. Many will also miss the kindly face from his accustomed seat on the lawn.
