July 21, 2012 LAKE ODESSA, MI- Mr. Mary L. Beard, born April 23, 1926, in Lake Odessa, to Edrie Lucille (Pull) McCartney and Arthur Hale McCartney Sr. She was preceded in death by her son, Arthur Ernest Beard, her husband, Carl L. Beard; granddaughter, Treah Marie Spencer; sisters, Lucille Everest and Patricia Hildreth; brothers, Arthur H. McCartney Jr. and William McCartney. She is survived by her children, Kevin E. Beard (Nancy Morelli), Kathleen E. (Kim) Jenkins, Lois E. (Michael) Sealy, Barbara E. (Kenneth) Sealy; 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Mary graduated with honors in 1944 from Lake Odessa High School and received her medical technician certification from Minneapolis, NM. She was a long time member of the United Methodist Church in Grand Ledge where she held the position of UMW president for over 20 years. She was a Sunday school teacher, girl scout leader, organizer of the Community Meal, and choir member. She practiced nursing and medical technology in the Ionia hospital for Dr. Hoffs' office in Lake Odessa. In 1952 she married Carl Beard then moved to Grand Ledge in 1954, where they raised four children. Following a time of being a caregiver to her mother and husband, Mary realized a lifelong dream to travel. She was able to visit every continent and even flew over Antarctica. Her health failed following a stroke 4 years ago. She peacefully passed away on Friday, July 6, 2012 with family members present. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 28, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist, 411 Harrison St., Grand Ledge, with Pastor Molly Turner officiating. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. until service time. (Luncheon to follow.) Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery, Lake Odessa.
