Ionia County News, 13 Jul 1961

John I. Beard, 64, rural Portland, was discovered dead at 6:50 a.m. on
Wednesday, July 11.  Beard apparently died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds. 
Ionia county Coroner Dale Kauffman said that Beard was found by his wife, Tracy.
 Beside his body was a 410-gauge shotgun.  He was reported to have been
despondent over ill health.  The incident was investigated by Kauffman and
Sheriff Peter Van Vleck.

In addition to his wife, Beard is survived by three sons, John Jr. and Donald,
Portland, and Lewain, San Diego, Calif.; a step-son, George, of Lewiston, Me.;
fourteen grandchildren; two brothers, Robert, Lyons, and Charles, Portland; and
two sisters, Mrs. Mary Morton, San Francisco, Calif. and Mrs. Clara Howard,
Portland.

The body was taken to the Neller Funeral Home in Portland.
