The Lake Odessa Wave, Thursday, December 27, 1928
Among the elderly women of this place none were more sweet in disposition than 
Mrs. Ellen Beard, who resided with her granddaughter, Miss Alice Gibbs, while 
in Lake Odessa.  When this granddaughter married Chester Hansbarger and went 
to live in Ionia the little grandmother was a welcomed part of the little 
household.  Grandma was always patient and well cared for and finally fell 
asleep and her body placed in the Silent City.

Ellen L. Olmstead was born in Wayne county, in 1843, later moving with her 
parents to Gratton, Kent County.  She was united in marriage in 1858 to John 
Wade.  To this union five children were born, three of whom are now living.  
Mr. Wade preceded her in death in March 1871.  She was united in marriage to 
James Beard in 1876.  To this union two children were born, one dying in 
infancy.  Mr. Beard passed on in December 1919.  Mrs. Beard departed this life 
December 19, 1928, of pneumonia, being ill only one day.

She is survived by two sons, I. J. Wade of Oregon; Ransom Wade of Woodland; 
and two daughters, Mrs. Olive Taylor of Oregon, and Mrs. Rose Meyers of East 
Odessa, seventeen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.  Mrs. Beard 
came to Lake Odessa thirty-four years ago, residing here until five years ago 
when she spent two years in Grand Rapids, and the remaining time she was with 
her granddaughter, Mrs. Alice Hansbarger of Ionia.  She was an invalid this 
entire time.  

The funeral was held at the United Brethren church, Friday, Rev. C. N. Stormes 
preaching and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Mourer sang accompanied by Mrs. Homer 
Bartlett.  Burial was at Lake Side.
