Beattie, former register of deeds, justice of the peace, and store owner, died at the home of his son, John Beattie, Jr., in Clarksville at 11 o’clock Friday evening. He was 88 years old. Active in Ionia business circles for many years, Mr. Beattie retired in 1938. He owned what is now the Johnson shoe store on West Main street for about 17 years, selling the store to Johnson in July, 1920. Previous to that he served for two terms, from 1911 to 1914 as register of deeds and later was elected justice of the peace. He served in that capacity for three years before retiring. He was an insurance agent for the Modern Woodmen of America, and was a member of the First Baptist church and belonged to the Canton order of the Odd Fellows. He was born in 1860 in Antrim county, Ireland, coming to the United States at the age of 12 years. He resided in this county almost all his life except for ten years in Jefferson City, Mo. He married Edith Allured of Ionia on Thanksgiving Day, 1882. After her death in 1941 he made his home in Clarksville with his son, John Jr. Surviving him are five children, Grace Elliot of Grand Rapids, Edith Deitz of Los Angeles, Calif., John Beattie of Clarksville, Alice Austin of Marion, O., and Nancy Sperry of St. Charles, Ill.; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great- grandchildren.
