For many years Mr Becker lived in the country east of this village, where he and his wife reared their family, but of late years he has made his home in this village at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Reiser. The following gives a brief account of a well spent life. George Becker was born in Germany January 1, 1838, and departed this life, Sunday May 29, 1916, aged 78 years, 4 months, 28 days. He came to America when but a lad of 14 years, first settling with a party of friends in Indiana. Later he came to Ionia, where he was engaged in the boot and shoe business. On March 19, 1868, he was married to Mary Richard and to this union seven children were born-three boys and four girls. Two boys have preceded him to the spirit world. In 1875 he purchased a farm in Odessa township, where he lived until 1906, when he moved to Lake Odessa. On March 6, 1907, his companion passed away. Since then he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs.Frank Reiser. He was converted under the labors of Rev.Miller, and joined the Evangelical church of which he was a member at the time of his death. He was a regular attendant at the German church until eight years ago, when he moved to town; since then he has attended the different churches, attending mostly at the Congregational Church. He was a kind and loving father. He was well known throughout the community and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He has been in fairly good health until two weeks ago, when he complained of not feeling well. It as not thought that he was seriously ill until Friday night, when he took a decided change for the worse. He was conscious to the last, having talked with all his children Sunday afternoon. He was a great sufferer to the end. He expressed a wish on Sunday afternoon. It was such a nice day he wished he could be at rest. He passed away Sunday evening at eight o'clock. He leaves to mourn their loss, one son, George F.Becker, of Odessa, four daughters, mrs.Frank Reiser of Lake Odessa, Mrs.R.C. Goodenough of Portland, Mrs A.J. Laughlin of Woodbury, Mr. Ernest Hough of Woodbury, at whose home he was at the time of his death; also four grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. The funeral was held at the Congregational Church Wednesday afternoon. Rev. W.J.Prestidge, a former pastor of that church, officiated, assisted by Rev. L.L. Steadman, the present pastor. The singing was by Mrs. O.C. Russ, Miss Marion Howard, Mr.Leon Gilson and Mr.Will Nabor. The body was laid to rest at Lake Side cemetery. Those out of town in attendance at the funeral were; Mr and Mrs George Kuhtz and daughter, Ionia, Mr and Mrs L.H. Kuhtz, Mr and Mrs Dick Taylor, Mr and Mrs. L.Morgan Taylor, of Ionia, Mr and Mrs Will Kuhtz, Mr and Mrs Chas.Chamberlain, Mr and Mrs George Becker, Frank Becker and sister, Bessie, Mr. and Mrs Frank Hunt of Orange and Mr L.Faul of Woodland. Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me, And may there be no meaning of the bar, When I put out to sea. But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark, And may here be no sadness of farewell When I embark. For though from out out bourne of time and place, The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face, When I have crossed the bar.
