Aged Portland Woman Burned Terribly, Dies

Mrs. Byron Beebe’s Dress Caught Fire as She Fixed Furnace; Five-Year-Old Boy
Sees Tragedy, But Too Late

Funeral services were held this afternoon at Portland for Mrs. Pollie Beebe,
wife of Byron Beebe, whose tragic death as the result of burns, followed the
accidental catching fire of Mrs. Beebe’s clothes at her home Saturday.

Boy Sees Tragedy

Hearing screams from the Beebe home near which he was playing, little Bobbie
Lung, five-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Lung, looked into the window of
the Beebe kitchen.  Inside he saw Mrs. Beebe, 71 years of age, with her clothing
ablaze, trying to extinguish the flames at the kitchen sink.  The boy ran to his
home and told his mother, who hurried to Mrs. Beebe’s assistance.  Upon her
arrival there she found the aged woman with her clothing nearly all burned from
her body, and her flesh over most of her body burned to a crisp.  Mrs. Beebe
lived until 4:00 o’clock Saturday afternoon.

Live Coals Fire Dress

According to the story as pieced together, Mrs. Beebe went down cellar to fix
the furnace.  She pulled some clinkers and live coals from the furnace and
placed them on an ash heap.  While she was putting more fuel in, her dress
caught fire from the blazing coals.  She made her way up stairs and into the
kitchen, where she made her vain effort to put out the blaze, which rapidly
enveloped her.

Mrs. Beebe leaves besides her husband, one daughter, Mrs. John Horner.

Mrs. Beebe was an old resident of Ionia county, and was born in Danby township.
