Spencer Beecher, 66, well known resident of Ionia for over 20 years, died Monday at his home. Funeral services are to be held at 1:30 this afternoon, Thursday, from the Methodist church with Rev. Adam Westmaas, pastor of the Presbyterian church officiating. Burial will be at Balcom cemetery, south of Ionia. Spencer Beecher was born March 2, 1875, at Lansing, a son of Spencer and Rebecca Schaeffer Beecher and spent his early life at Mason and vicinity and at Allegan. He later worked for eight years at New York and 13 years at Boston. Here In 1919. He married Mayme M. Wheeler December 6, 1913, at Boston. He came to Ionia in 1919 as an accountant in the steward’s office of the State Hospital, and spent the remainder of his life at Ionia. At the resignation of A. J. Hemingway, he was appointed steward in 1924. In talking with the County news this week Dr. Perry Robertson, medical superintendent at the hospital, spoke many words of praise for the deceased. He said Beecher had been very valuable and his reliability and loyalty were outstanding. He was a member of the Presbyterian church at Mason, and a member of the Ionia Elks Lodge and Rotary Club. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Clinton and Robert of Lansing; three grandchildren; one brother, William of Palm Beach, Florida.
