Belcher, 82, a retired government employee and native of Ionia county, died Sunday at 11:15 a.m. at his home at 950 Den Hertog SW, Grand Rapids, after a long illness. He was born October 1, 1878 in a log cabin two miles from Portland, the son of Alonzo and Alinda LaMore Belcher, and moved to Sherman with his parents in 1883. He completed his schooling in Sherman and in 1900 moved to Chicago, Ill. He was employed by the United States treasury department 10 years in the Chicago sub-district and 25 years as deputy collector of customs. He was in charge of the customs office during the World Fair in Chicago in 1933. He was a 50-year life member of Lakeview Masonic lodge in Chicago, and was a partner of his brother, Charles, in a department store in Woodstock, Ill, 40 years. His parents were residents of Lake Odessa a number of years. His father died at Lake Odessa in 1940 at the age of 94 ½ and his mother died in 1929. Mr. Belcher is survived by a brother, William of Woodstock, Ill., and several nieces and nephews. Service will be held at the Pickens funeral chapel Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. under the auspices of Lake Odessa Masonic lodge 395. The Rev. F.J. Fitch will officiate and burial will be at Lakeside cemetery.
