Many of our readers will remember an item which appeared in these columns some 
time since (a couple of years ago) concerning the swallowing of a portion of 
an earring by the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Belcher, at that time living 
south of town, but who now reside at Muir.

The article swallowed was the pendant of a gutta-percha earring and it was 
taken into one of the lungs.  Nothing was thought of it for a while but it 
finally began to trouble the young girl not a little.  Dr. Alton treated her 
and it was thought the article had been dislodged.  One day, however, in a fit 
of coughing the substance was ejected and it was thought she would get along 
all right, and she did for a time; but death finally resulted from the effects 
of it on Thursday last and burial was made in Portland cemetery on Saturday.
