Bemis Wednesday With Sorrow Ionia Learns of Demise of Former Lo__ Ed Superintendent. Prof. Charles L. Bemis passed away Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at his home in East Lansing after a year of poor health. Capt. J.C. Taylor of this city received a telegram late Wednesday containing the news of his demise. The body arrives here Friday at 11:30 and will be taken to Highland park at 1 o’clock for burial without any services here. Deceased was a native son of Ionia county, the old home having been in Easton. He graduated from the Michigan Agricultural college and taught at Portland before coming to Ionia. For 17 years he held the position of superintendent of schools in this city, and no one ever connected with the schools in this capacity ever left with a larger circle of warm and tried friends as Prof. Bemis. He left Ionia about 10 years ago, since when his family home has been in East Lansing. Until a year ago he was at the head of the State Normal school of West Virginia, his health giving out at the close of the school year, since which time he retired from active work at East Lansing. He was in Ionia visiting but two weeks ago, and J.C. Taylor and daughters visited at his home in East Lansing a week before his death. Besides the bereaved wife he is survived by a daughter, Bessie, who is head of the domestic science department of the University of Minnesota, a son Elden, who is in charge of the farm owned by his father and home one-half mile east of East Lansing and a daughter Delia, who is an accomplished musician and has a large class of pupils in Lansing. W.W. Bemis of Ionia is a brother. Mr. Bemis was a man of marked educational ability, leaving a fine record at Ionia, and while in West Virginia more than doubled the size of the school he supervised. He was a man of wide sympathies, absolutely honest, devoted to his vocation and untiring in its pursuit. Simple yet broadminded, he lived not only for himself, but for his friends and the betterment of mankind – a man whose death means to many the loss of a ___ .
