Word was received Tuesday night by Fred Klotz advising him of the death in Detroit of William Benedict, a former well known and highly esteemed Portland resident. Mr. Benedict passed away suddenly at his home in that city from heart trouble. He had been ill about four weeks. The body will be brought to Portland and funeral services held from the Baptist church Friday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock. The services will be in charge of a minister from Detroit. Mr. Benedict, who was past 70 years of age, was born in Watertown, N. Y., and came to Orange township with his parents when four years of age. Forty-eight years ago he was united in marriage to Carrie Nicholson, the couple residing in Orange for several years after that event when they moved to this village, occupying the house where Morris West now resides. For some time while living in Portland Mr. Benedict conducted a meat market in a building located on the west side on the site now occupied by the Agnes Newman memorial fountain, at the northeast corner of Powers park. About 20 years ago the family left Portland and for several years lived at Port Huron, later moving to Detroit. Besides the widow he is survived by three daughters and one son. They are Mrs. Peter Pelliter, of Port Huron; Mrs. Gerald Scott, of Worcester, Mass.; Mrs. Allen Streeter and Louis Benedict, of Detroit. Mrs. Chas. Miles is a niece and George Bandfield a nephew. Fred Klotz is a nephew by marriage, his mother and Mrs. Benedict being sisters.
