Benedict, who passed from this life on Friday, January 21, 1927, was a real pioneer of Michigan and especially of Ionia county. He first saw the light of day in Oakland county on August 20, 1855, and was 71 years, 4 months of age when called into the world that lies beyond. When the object of this sketch was eight years old his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joel Benedict, moved from Oakland to Ionia county, his maternal grandfather, Rev. John Morrison, being at that time pastor of the Baptist church of Ionia. In 1897 Mr. Benedict went to Dakota, where he spent the next ten years. At the death of his father he disposed of his interests in the West and returned to Michigan and purchased the old homestead in Ionia township, residing there until 1910, when he purchased the John Sessions farm, one of the first farms to be laid out in the county, which is situated west of the present site of the county farm on M-21. In 1890 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Trowbridge, of Pontiac. Surviving are one son, Joel T. Benedict, Ionia; one daughter, Mrs. Alfred Fischer of Ann Arbor. Three sisters, Mrs. J. H. Canfield of Pittsburg, and Misses Cornelia and Jessie Benedict of Evanston, Ill; a grandson, Gordon Fischer, Ann Arbor, are also among the immediate members of his family who remain to mourn his passing.
