Grosse Pointe Woods – Funeral services were held Thursday for Margaret M.
Benedict, 101, who died Tuesday at a Detroit nursing home.  A retired school
teacher, she was the widow of the late Dr. Richard L. Benedict, a dentist who
practiced in Ionia and West Branch.  She was the daughter of Gillis and Penelope
McBain who founded the town of McBain, near Cadillac, where she was born in 1882.

A graduate of Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, she taught in Des
Moines and Council Bluffs, Iowa, and at Hull House in Chicago where she was an
associate of the late Jane Addams, founder of that school.

She is survived by a son, Gillis, of St. Clair Shores, six grandchildren and six
great grandchildren.
