Mrs. Joel Benedict died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.G. Mercer,
Saranac, Wednesday, October 18, after several months illness.  Ruth Mercer was
born in Saranac August 15, 1893, and with the exception of a year spent in
California, had always lived in Ionia County.

She was a graduate of Saranac High school, Class of 1912, and for a year
operated a millinery store at Clarksville.  She later returned to Saranac and
was associated with her mother, Mrs. T.G. Mercer in the store until her marriage
to Joel Benedict which took place in March, 1928.  Since that time the family
has lived near Morrison Lake.

Last August Mrs. Benedict underwent a serious operation in a Grand Rapids
hospital.  Early in September she left the hospital and remained at the home of
her parents in Saranac until her death Wednesday morning.

Besides her parents and husband she leaves a two year old daughter, Marion, and
a son, Richard, two sisters, Mrs. Esther Brunquist, of Denver Colorado, and Mrs.
Rachel Eddy, of Saranac.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 from the Mercer home
with burial in Saranac cemetery.

Mrs. Benedict was a well loved neighbor and friend and her death is a distinct
loss, not only to her family and close friends, but to the community in which
she was ever a loyal and faithful worker.  A talented musician, she was always
in demand for community affairs and for the various associations to which she
belonged, the Literary club, Rebecca lodge and the Grange.
