May 16, 2012 Richard Mercer "Dick" Benedict was born March 17, 1929 in Saranac, and was a longtime resident of Columbus, Ohio. He passed into eternity on May 14, 2012, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Preceded in death by parents, Joel Benedict and Ruth Benedict (nee Mercer). Survived by loving wife of 61 years, Doris M. Benedict (nee Dunham); sisters, Marion Raymor McKendry and Sandi (Louis) Shafer; children, Janet (John) McGough, Jodie (Thomas) Przybylski, James (Terri) Benedict and Jeanne D. Benedict; grandchildren, Danielle N. (Eric) Anderson, E. Scott (Christin) Frantz, Cameron J. Benedict (Fiancé Cassie Wetherill), Justin B. Benedict and Gavin R. Benedict; great grandchildren, Nolan, Ava, Cole and Reed Anderson; many nieces and nephews and extended family. Graduate of Saranac HS Class of 1947. Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the 196th Regimental Combat Team, Fort Richardson, Alaska, during the Korean conflict. Dick was an over-the-road driver for Yellow Freight Systems for 39 years, retired Teamster Local 413. He was a member of the American Legion. Former multi-term President of the Church council and long-time volunteer at Advent Lutheran Church, Upper Arlington, Ohio. After retirement, Dick performed vehicle transfers for local automobile dealership, progressing to Title courier, he was known far and wide in BMV offices all around central Ohio. He became "mayor", "ambassador", and a much loved figure of his corner of Columbus while exercising his faithful companions, KC and Lady. His family would like to thank all those individuals who have expressed their high regard and love for their father. Dick was a fierce competitor in every sport and game he played and especially enjoyed golf, pool and the Advent Euchre club. He was an avid motorcyclist until the age of 77. He was a self-taught computer technologist specializing in Microsoft applications and systems. Though he was raised as a supporter of "that team up north" he became a true and loyal supporter o the OSU Buckeyes. Dick liked nothing more than sharing a meal, a libation or fellowship with his family, his church and his neighbors. He lived his Christian values by sharing his love of life, caring nature and good humor with his fellow man wherever he went. Visitation will be at Schoedinger Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus on Friday, May 18, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Celebration of Life Service to be held at Advent Lutheran Church, 3660 Kenny Road, Upper Arlington, Ohio 43220 at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 19, 2012, Rev. William Saunders, officiating. Family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Richard M.
