Lois Irene Benedict, 91, of Ionia passed away on April 9, 2003.  Lois was born 
on July 25, 1911 in Ionia the daughter of Wellington and Clarissa (Hinds) 
Smith.  She lived her entire life in Berlin Township rural Ionia.  She was a 
graduate of Ionia High School and received a county normal teaching 
certificate in 1932 and had taught school in the rural area of Ionia.   She 
married Morris R. Benedict on June 27, 1935 who preceded her in death August 
15, 1967.  She continued to live on their farm and enjoyed her large garden 
and the outdoors.  Lois was a lifelong member of LeValley United Methodist 
Church and had been an active member of the Ionia County Farm Bureau.

She is survived by her son Keith R. Benedict of Ionia; daughter, Patricia 
(Ray) Cordahl of Floral City, Florida; sister, Marian Mongeau of Grand Rapids; 
grandson Scott Benedict; granddaughters Jodi (Steve) Smith, Lisa (Michael) 
Ferrell, Beth (Brent) Bedaine; five great grandchildren; several step-
grandchildren and great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Morris; parents Wellington and 
Clarissa, stepdaughter Jean Wieczorek-Osborne; sisters, infant sister Edna, 
Hazel Wade, Ell Uschuck; brothers, Marshall, Roy and Lester Smith.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at LeValley United Methodist 
Church with the Rev. David Flagel officiating.  Burial will be in Balcom 
Cemetery in Ionia.  The family will receive friends and family one hour prior 
to service.

Anyone wishing may make a memorial contribution to Ionia Area Hospice.  
Arrangements were made by Lake Funeral Home in Ionia.
