Mrs. Benedict had spent all of her life in Ionia county, was one of the oldest continuous residents of the county and was numbered among the last surviving pioneers in this vicinity. A member of the Methodist church for many years, Mrs. Benedict held a record as the oldest member of the Ionia Methodist church. The daughter of Phebe Tuttle and (illegible) LeValley, she was born in Ionia township September 30, 1848, the eldest of a family of five children of which John LeValley, 85, of Ionia township is the only surviving member. Mrs. Benedict recalled many stories of the early pioneer days of Ionia and of the Indians. Her father cut his farm from virgin forest and she was educated in the school built by him. On November 4, 1874 Harriet LeValley and Abel F. Benedict were united in marriage and settled on a farm near the Benedict school. To this union seven children were born, five of whom survive: Ella and Keith Benedict at home, Ira L. Benedict of Lansing, Dr. Luren D. Benedict of Ionia; and Lulu B. Smith of Woodard Lake. In 1920 the Benedicts moved to Ionia and Mr. Benedict’s death occurred in that year. “Grandma” Benedict as she was known by her many friends was actively interested in newspapers, her quilting, and simple household tasks as well as enjoying automobile rides until she sustained a fractured hip several months ago. In addition to her children and brother survivors are nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at her home on Harter street.
