Benedict, 48, of 940 Sever drive, East Lansing, state employee and member of the Democratic party was stricken at his summer home at Eagle Point, Lake Odessa. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Pennock hospital in Hastings Saturday night. Born January 24, 1925, at Lansing he was the son of Dr. L.A. and Laura M. Cooke Benedict and later moved with his parents to Portland. He enlisted in the navy June 9, 1942 during World War II and received a discharge in April 24, 1946. He attended Portland schools and graduated from high school while in the service. He attended Merritt college at Oakland, Calif., in 1948 and 1949 and City college at San Francisco, Calif. in 1950. He married Mary B. Baptista at Oakland, Calif, March 1, 1943, and came to Lansing in 1950 where he attended Michigan State university at East Lansing from March 1951 until June 1955. He graduated with a BA degree in public administration. He was city manager at Durand from June 1955 to December 1959. From then to October of 1971, when he retired due to ill health, he was employed by the State of Michigan. His last position was executive secretary to William Ryan, speaker of the house of representatives. Previously he was administrative assistant to Gov. John Swainston. He was a member of American Veterans and many other clubs and organizations. He was the Democratic nominee for the sixth district for United States Congress in 1962. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Michael V. and Richard R. and daughter, Mrs. James McFarland, all students at Michigan State university, East Lansing; granddaughter and sister, Mrs. Robert Decker of Portland. Rosary will be recited Monday at 7:30 pm at Pickens-Koops funeral chapel at Lake Odessa. Funeral mass will be Tuesday at 1:30 pm at St. Edwards Catholic church in Lake Odessa. Fr.
