Jane grew up in Lyons, attended County Normal Teachers School in St. Johns, and taught at the Welch Road School. She married Albert W. Benedict on New Year’s Eve of 1937, he preceded her in death in 1962. She was a stay-at-home mom for 13 years on their farm on Murphy Road outside of Lyons, and often referred to those years as the happiest of her life. Due to the illness of her husband, Jane went to work at Ivan Clark Manufacturing Co. in Lyons and worked there for three years until she returned to classes to work towards her Bachelor’s degree in Education at Western Michigan University. She taught at Palo Community Schools for 27 years until her retirement in 1979. She was an active member in the Lyons Methodist, now Lyons-Muir Church, serving as Sunday School and Bible School teacher and Superintendent, member of the W.S.C.S., choir director, and singing in the church choir for 51 years. She served on the Lyons Library Board and was a member of the Lyons-Muir Historical Society. She traveled to England and Hawaii and to several states with her special friends Elaine Nelson, Norma Hayes, Louise Kistler and Jennie Ludwick. Jane is survived by three children: Judith (Bob) VanderVeen of Ionia, Sue (Stefan) Laxdal of Minnesota, and Alan (Gail) Benedict of Ionia; six grandchildren: Scott (Deanne) Fell, Jon (Debbie) VanderVeen, Derek VanderVeen; Wendy (Brian) Johnson, Chris (Kimberly) Laxdal, and Gerry (Shelley) Benedict; great-grandchildren Heather, Zakk, Catherine, Jenna, Sean, Steven, Stacia, Scottie, Stefanie, Dylan, Samantha, Kaylie, Cassidy, Chase; and great-great grandchildren Hunter, Jenna and Cameron. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday at Lyons-Muir Church with Rev. Mark Johnson and Rev. Burt Nelson officiating. Interment Lyons Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives Wednesday 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Lake Funeral Home in Muir.
