Benjamin, 87, of 743 Bridge, Lyons, died Tuesday at St. Lawrence hospital, Lansing, of an apparent heart attack. He had been a patient one day. Born March 10, 1883, in Galesburg he was the son of Frank and Hattie Stiles Benjamin. October 14, 1903, he was married to Lulu Bugbee in Ionia and they celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. He owned and operated a livery barn and dray service in Lyons 21 years and was the first man to have a car for rental in Lyons. He moved east of Lyons where he farmed until his retirement a few years ago returning to live in Lyons. He was the oldest living member of Lyons Baptist church. His daughter, Phyllis Patrick, preceded him in death 10 days ago. Surviving besides the wife, Lulu, are three sons, Otto of Grand Rapids, William of Portland and Bert., Jr. of Grand Ledge; nine grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Until noon Friday Mr. Benjamin will be at Shaw-Rivett-Hull funeral home in Muir. Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Lyons Baptist church. Rev. C.R. Harrison will officiate and interment will be at Lyons cemetery. A memorial has been established for Lyons Baptist church.
