Shirley D. Benner, 72, of Lyons passed away Monday, April 22, 2002 in Ionia.  
She was born Oct. 21, 1929 in Saranac, the daughter of Gerald and Helen 
(Gleason) Sherman.  She went on to marry Verlon “Nub” Benner on Dec. 9, 1949.  
He preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 1995.

Shirley worked at Mitchell Bently for 16 years and at Lyons Chrysler Plant for 
five years.  She worked at many functions including steak fries and other 
benefit dinners at the VFW-Lyons.  She was an honorary member of NPLRMC.  She 
also enjoyed listening to Karaoke.

She is survived by her sons, William Carl (Sandy) Benner of St. Johns and Gary 
Lee “Papa Smurf” Benner of Lyons; brother, Pat (Jean) Sherman of Arkansas; 
sisters, Frances Schaefer of Muir and Judy (Gary) Bishop Sr. of Muir; 
grandchildren, Nicholas Benner (fiancée, Jennifer Cup) of Ionia, Melissa (Mike) 
Gustafson of Ionia, Ginger (Lewis) Reed of Ionia; Wendy Benner (fiancé, Mike 
Meyers) of Muir and Scott Benner of Illinois; five great-grandchildren; and 
special friend, Evelyn Hawley of Muir.

She was preceded in death by one son, Edward Benner in 1997; three sisters; one 
brother; two brother-in-laws; and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday at Lyons-Muir Church with 
“Preacher” Tom Olger presiding.  Visitation is 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 
8:30 p.m., Wednesday and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Thursday at the Lake Funeral Home 
Hull Memorial Chapel in Muir.  Anyone wishing may make a memorial contribution 
to Ionia Area Hospice.  Envelopes available at the funeral home.
