He was born in Berlin Township, Ionia County, September 22, 1907, to Charles and Alma (Pickens) Bennett. He attended rural schools, graduating from Lake Odessa High School. He was a meat cutter for Hoopmans Market, Ionia. He served in World War II in the New Guinea and Philippines campaigns. He was discharged in 1945. He married Iva Aikens, June 10, 1950 in St. Johns. They lived on Lawton Street since their marriage. He worked at the Ionia State Hospital for several years before retiring in 1970. He was a member of the Sheridan VFW Post and a member of the VFW Cooties organization. He is survived by his wife Iva; a step-son, Gerald Aikens, of Ionia; a daughter, Mrs. Don (Marilyn) Long, of Grand Rapids, two grandchildren, and one niece, Mrs. Gene (Suzanne) Hauter, of Clare. A sister, Lorene Petersen, preceded him in death in 1980. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Leddick Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Dow of First Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Balcom Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Michigan Heart Association. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.
