Bennett, a jovial, well known and highly respected resident of Danby township, passed away quietly at 4:00 Tuesday morning at his farm home 2 ¾ miles south of Portland, in the so-called Dow neighborhood. He had been unconscious for several days, but until losing his senses he appeared to be supremely confident that he would eventually recover and never, for an instant, did he lose courage, although his vitality steadily grew weaker day by day. Mr. Bennett was literally in the prime of life at the time of his demise, having been only a trifle past 56 years of age. He was born near Chatham, Ont., March 14, 1864, and when 18 months old he came with his parents to the United States, settling first on a farm near Williamston. Later on Mr. Bennett came to Berlin township, Ionia county, where he worked on different farms, and 29 years ago he came to the neighborhood where he resided at the time of his death. He had lived on a number of farms in the vicinity and for the past fourteen years had made his home on the farm where he died. He was a hard worker and a splendid man in his family, who are overwhelmed with grief over his death. On October 15, 1882, Mr. Bennett married Miss Rose Shell, of Muskegon, who survives him, as do also two children, Ray J. Bennett, of Danby township, and Mrs. C.J. Smith, of Marion, Indiana. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. G. Witzel, of Ionia, and two brothers, C.C. Bennett, of Casnovia, and William Bennett, of Grand Rapids. Mr. Bennett was always popular in his home township, his typical good nature and sunny disposition winning him many friends. A good demonstration of his popularity was manifested in the township elections of 1917, 1918, and 1919, when he was elected highway commissioner of Danby, on the republican ticket, by sweeping majorities. Danby is normally democratic, but Mr. Bennett always won out on the minority ticket with plenty of votes to spare. When news of his death spread over the township, citizens from nearly every section of Danby called at his home to view the remains and to express their sympathy to the family. Mr. Bennett was a member of the Portland Congregational church, the Portland Grange, and a charter member of the Portland Woodman lodge, carrying a $1,000 policy on his life in this order. Funeral services were held this (Thursday) afternoon at the late residence, Rev. J. M. DeVette of the Portland Baptist church, officiating. A male quartette from Portland sang. At the close of the services the remains were interred in the Portland cemetery.
