Roy W. Bennett, 26, of Lyons, a member of the U.S. Air Force, died at 8:55 a.m. Wednesday, May 9 at the base hospital at Maxwell Air Force base at Montgomery, Ala., following an operation Tuesday morning for the removal of a brain tumor. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George F. Bennett of Lyons. Bennett served over four years in the Army Air Force during World War II, after enlisting in September, 1942. He was discharged in November, 1946 and worked at the Ionia Manufacturing company and the Ionia reformatory before reenlisting March 9, 1951. He was sent to Selfridge Field and then was assigned to Maxwell Field as a mechanic. A flying enthusiast and licensed pilot, at one time he and Olin Smith of Lyons, were co-owners of a plane which they maintained at the Ionia county airport. He was born May 29, 1924, in Lyons where he lived all his life except for his years in the service. He attended Lyons high school. Bennett was a member of the Girard-Horrocks post, American Legion, and the Ionia B.P.O.E. He had also been a member of the L.O.O.M. for three years. Surviving besides the parents are a brother, Lt. Robert F. Bennett, who is stationed with the U.S. Air Force at Harmon Air Force base in Newfoundland, and two sisters, Mrs. Harry Collier and Mrs. L. Dean Joslyn, both of Ionia. Funeral time and date will be determined as soon as the body arrives in Lyons. Services will be held from the Lyons Methodist church with the Rev. Myron Hoyt officiating. Interment will be in Muir cemetery. It is expected that full military rites will be given. Lt. Robert Bennett telephoned his parents Wednesday evening that he would arrive home Thursday. Funeral services will be conducted at Lyons at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Lyons Methodist church. The body will arrive in Muir by train at 4:50 p.m. Friday.
