William Carlisle “Bill” Bennett, 87, of Lansing, passed away Sunday, December 
26, 2004.  He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 27, 1917, to Frank and 
Beulah Shear Bennett.

Bill came to Michigan at the age of 5 and lived on a farm in Clinton County.  
He was a Boy Scout in Troop 102 and was a graduate of Hubbardston High School, 
where he was president of his class all four years and graduated as 
salutatorian of his class.  After high school Bill went on to attend Acme 
Business College in Lansing.  He married Nellie Shipman on December 25, 1941.  
He enlisted in the Army and served four years and nine months, during which 
time he became master sergeant in the Assistant Chief of Staff GI Office in an 
infantry division during World War II in France, Germany and Austria.  Bill was 
honorably discharged October 29, 1945.  He then went to work for the automobile 
transporter Howard Sober and successors for about 35 years until his retirement 
in 1980.

He was preceded in death by nephew, Carlyle Bennett.  He is survived by his 
wife, Nellie; two brothers, Robert G. Bennett of Hubbardston, Donald L. Bennett 
of Paso Robles, California; nephew, John Bennett of Hubbardston; and three 
nieces, Marcia Kesselring of Tennessee, Valarie Berry of California, Karol Lee 
Zarick of Toledo, Ohio.  

Funeral services were Wednesday at Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.  
Interment is in Westside Cemetery, Hubbardston.  In lieu of flowers, memorial 
contributions may be given to the Parkinson’s Foundation in memory of Bill.
