Bennett, 70, of Lyons, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 23, 2003. He was born on December 17, 1932 in Lyons the son of Clarence and Wreatha (Mason) Bennett. Mr. Bennett retired from Oldsmobile after 30 years of service, was a retired First Sgt. of the Michigan National Guard, and was voted Michigan Soldier of the Year in 1964. He volunteered for the Appalachian Service Project and was involved in the Stephen Ministries. He was a member of the Lyons-Muir Church and was very instrumental in the construction of the new church. Jerry was a grandpa and uncle to many children in the area, treating them like his own. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Jack Bennett; and sister Joan Dennis. Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Ruth I (Almy); children, Dennis (Lori) Bennett of Morrice, Cheryl (Fred) McCrumb of Lansing, and David (Denise) Bennett of Wyoming; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two brothers, Larry (Mary) Bennett of Great Falls, Montana, and Mitchell (Gert) Bennett of Lyons; sister, Virginia (John) Snyder of Muir; two aunts, Reva McGee of Ionia and Naomi Mason of Palo; several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Scott K. Otis and Mr. Richard Tipton at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Lyons-Muir Church. Military Honors will be provided by the Michigan National Guard Grand Ledge Post. Interment will take place in the spring at Keefer Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 Bridge Street, Portland from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday; and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
